Mini splits made with "extra" queen cells from queen-less splits are outgrowing their space.

I had these boxes made to be convertible. A dado cut inside allows a piece of lumber to divide the 5 frame into dual 2 frame hives. Swiveling entrance doors are a nice touch I added.

They do work exactly as intended. They could be tuned up a bit with a sharp planer and some sanding tools.

However, Getting those boards out once the bees seal them in and the wood is a bit damp. Can't do it with bees in it. I think having some fixed 5 frame boxes ready would be easier. Just store the convertibles when not using.

I have thought about doing the same thing only with 3 frame boxes. Maybe a couple triple divided boxes with thinner dividers to share more heat. Then when these are outgrown it makes more sense to transition from 3 to 8 frame hives. Going from 2-5-10 is ok. 3-8 is intriguing to me.
