The main aim of the Second Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Senior Officials’Meeting (APEC SOM) is to boost the regional economic growth through the cooperation between service and education industry, said APEC SOM chair Laura Del Rosario at the meeting's opening ceremony on Wednesday in Boracay Island, the Philippines.

Senior officials and private sector representatives of the regional economic organization said the meeting will focus on the regional cooperation of service industry, small business development, agricultural economy, internet economy, environmental issues, technological innovation as well as education industry.

Rosario said service industry is very important as its output value is 60 percent more than other industries’output value in the Asia-Pacific region.

"We will know what segments and what principals to offer. Definitely, cooperation in developing services capability is one, definitely, building capacity is one, and I hope facilitation of the entry of services will also be one of them,"said Rosario.

Rosario said it is urgent to promote the development of education as the root of the severe unemployment is lack of education and training in the countries in the region.

"We hope that in the future, we will have teachers, professors who can teach in the APEC region. So that their expertise and their knowledge can be shared among all. We are also working on the APEC student exchanges. We have six universities already who are involved in the APEC university scholarship program," said Rosario.

Senior government officials from 21 Pacific Rim member economies and representatives of APEC secretariat are attending the two-day meeting.
