Its height reaches up to 2 m 70 cm. An adult male ostrich can weigh up to 100 kilograms. Ostriches cannot fly due to their large body weight. They develop a speed of up to 70 km/h.
General characteristics
Ostrich is a flightless bird, the wings are poorly developed, there is no keel. Ostriches can do without water for a long time, but when they have the opportunity, they willingly drink water and bathe. In captivity, ostriches live up to 50 years. They develop a speed of 60-70 km/h. The average weight is 50-75 kg, individual males can weigh up to 131 kg.

Dissemination
They live in the savannas and semi-deserts of Africa. Hundreds of thousands of years ago, ostriches also lived in the south of Ukraine and further east to Mongolia.

Lifestyle
They live in groups of 10 to 50 birds. Herds of wildebeest and zebra often graze with ostriches in the savannah.

The ostrich usually escapes from predators. Often, young ostriches fall to the ground, stretching their long necks. In such a strange position, it is difficult for the enemy of the ostrich to notice its victim. When the bird has nowhere to retreat, it becomes a dangerous opponent. Its strong two-toed paws are a reliable defense tool.

The legend that a frightened ostrich hides its head in the sand probably comes from the fact that a female ostrich sitting on a nest, in case of danger, flattens its neck and head on the ground, trying to become invisible against the background of the surrounding savannah. Ostriches act in the same way after noticing predators. If you approach such a bird, it instantly grabs and runs away.
