A video shared by the forest department in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu shows an AI-based surveillance system designed to prevent elephant deaths on railway tracks. The system, installed along a track in Madukkarai, consists of 12 towers, each equipped with AI cameras capable of thermal and visible light imaging, along with live viewing. This has facilitated more than 6,500 safe crossings and there have been no elephant deaths since November 2023 along those tracks, the state’s forest department said in a social media post.
