They Say We Have to Leave is an immersive documentary installation responding to the tragedy of September 2023, when over 120,000 Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) were forced to abandon their homes. The historical incident is brought to life through the voices and experiences of 120 women from Artsakh, creating a shared space for remembrance and empathy.

Directed by Swiss-Armenian filmmaker Varsy Buchmann, “They Say We Have to Leave” gives voice to the silenced and displaced Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh and aims to confront audiences with the human cost of forced exile and cultural erasure, ensuring these stories are seen, heard, and never forgotten.

As the world faces rising displacement and cultural loss, “They Say We Have to Leave” reminds us that the responsibility to protect human rights extends beyond borders — especially when histories, cultures, and shared heritage are at risk of being lost in silence.
