Are we asking for too much? This is what a good (salsa or any social dance-floor type) social should be—or what most socials should aim for. Do you agree? Share with your dance mates, DJs, and events (especially those that wasted your time)! 💃🕺

Socials are now charging $15-$20—the price of a luxury dozen eggs 🥚😆—so is it fair to say we dancers deserve better? Organizers, DJs, and promoters ask for our support, but what are they actually improving? What are you changing to make us return or new dancers stay?

Los Angeles has 3.8 million residents—why rely on the same handful of dancers to keep events alive? Retention matters, but so does creating new social dancers. If we want lifelong salsa & bachata social dancers (this includes Kiz, Zouk, Hustle too), it starts with culture supported by GOOD MUSIC and a well-balanced playlist.

🎶 What keeps dancers coming back? What makes new dancers embrace social dancing as a lifestyle? The music. And a few other things:

✅ No live DJ mixing (no horns, fades, effects)
✅ End songs at their original length (trim intros, cut silent endings)
✅ Continuous songs—no pauses or awkward gaps
✅ Curated playlists: MORE salsa romántica, balanced subgenres (timba, charanga, etc.) If you’re teaching linear LA-style on1, don’t play 80% timba!
✅ Slower salsa or slower sets after midnight
✅ Live bands FOR social dancers (not just concerts)
✅ Prioritize musicality 🎼
✅ AC & ventilation (especially if charging $20-$25)
✅ Balanced surround sound—SAFE for dancers' ears 🔊
✅ Minimal mic use—no long announcements 🎤
✅ Accurate flyer info 📌
✅ Great dance floor—no cliques, foster inclusivity 🫂
✅ Encouraged social dance etiquette

Other essentials:
🕺 Queue/wait area
🎥 Video/bright light area (Some of y’all treat socials like a film set—designate a space and calm down with the LED headlights!)
🪑 Resting area
💰 Reasonable cover charge
🚗 Accessible parking
