How to write a CRITICAL Literature Review: You MUST follow these 3 STEPS!

Many students have been told the literature review for their dissertation is not critical enough and that their literature review is too descriptive. Their literature review critique is often substandard because students do not know how to write a critical literature review.

In this video Dr. Miguel Moital explains the ‘intellectual ladder’ which is an intuitive and effective way to explain how to do a critical literature review.

Writing a literature review is a multi-step process whereby lower levels of intellectual skills are first employed before higher levels can be used. All researchers have to navigate through the ‘intellectual ladder’, which includes three steps: description, analysis and evaluation. The higher in the ladder you are at, the greater the intellectual skills you are demonstrating (and consequently the greater the chances of getting a top grade dissertation).

The video explains uses a critical literature review example to demonstrate how students can move from description to analysis and from analysis to evaluation. Using a literature review critique example, it takes them through the process by looking in to a gap in the literature example.
