President Claudia Sheinbaum has called for calm and urged Mexicans to rely on official information after the killing of infamous Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes in a federal operation in Jalisco.
Mexico is on high alert after the government confirmed the death of one of the country’s most wanted cartel leaders, Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. The federal operation that took him down triggered a wave of violence across western Mexico, even as President Claudia Sheinbaum moved quickly to project control and urge the public to stay calm.
Authorities say the operation took place on Sunday morning in the municipality of Tapalpa, Jalisco, about 130 kilometers southwest of Guadalajara. According to the Defense Ministry, military personnel came under attack during a targeted operation against CJNG members.
Troops returned fire, killing four CJNG members at the scene and seriously wounding three others, including Oseguera. The Defense Ministry reports that El Mencho died while being transported by air to Mexico City as a result of his injuries. Three military personnel were also wounded and transferred to the capital for medical treatment.
In the hours after the operation, CJNG gunmen responded with a violent show of force. Fiery narco-blockades were erected on roads and highways in Jalisco and neighboring states, paralyzing traffic and spreading fear among residents. In Puerto Vallarta, a Costco store was among several businesses set on fire as part of the cartel’s retaliation. As of the latest official reports, it was not neighboring states, paralyzingcivilians had been killed in the unrest.
President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the situation on social media Sunday afternoon, confirming that the Defense Ministry had reported on the federal operation and emphasizing coordination with state governments across the country. “There is complete coordination with governments of all states,” she wrote, adding, “We must remain informed and stay calm.”
Sheinbaum stressed that activities were proceeding normally in most of the country and directed the public to follow the official accounts of the federal security cabinet for regular updates. She also praised the armed forces, saying, “My recognition to the Mexican Army, the National Guard, the armed forces and the Security Cabinet. We work every day for peace, security, justice and the well-being of Mexico.”
The federal security cabinet echoed that message, saying it is working in coordination with state governments “to respond to any incident.” Authorities have reinforced their presence in different parts of the country to clear roads, dismantle blockades and reestablish order, with support from all three levels of government.
The security cabinet has also urged people not to spread unverified information and to use only official channels for updates, stressing that the government’s top priority is to protect the population.
Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes had long been one of Mexico’s most elusive and powerful cartel leaders, and his death marks a major moment in the federal government’s battle against the CJNG. But the violent backlash seen in Jalisco and neighboring states underscores the cartel’s continued capacity to sow chaos, even as authorities move to restore order.
For ongoing coverage and verified updates, officials are directing citizens to federal security and Defense Ministry channels, while President Sheinbaum continues to call for calm and vigilance in the days ahead.
