Wayne and Hilary Strube from Therapy Nexus here to explain the parts and function of the IDEO and ExoSym Orthosis. The components we discus are the Carbon Fiber Foot Plate, Heel Wedges, Wings, Ankle Strap, Struts, Cuff, and Shoes.
The Carbon Fiber Foot Plate should be in plantar flexion. Ensure to check for pressure points to avoid blisters and rubbing any extra wholes in your body.
The Heel wedges come in different types of firmness and have to be cut to the appropriate height to fit with the foot plate and allow a proper rollover for walking.
The wings on the side help your ankle and foot stay in line and provide extra support for you.
The ankle strap assists in keeping you foot in the ExoSym when your trying to put on shoes and when your foot slips out of your shoe while running. I sure most of you all know that it hurts to land on you foot without a brace on it.
The struts come in different strengths. The strength will depend on your activity level, weight, and leg length. The ExoSym with come with the struts, foot plate and cuff all in one solid piece.
The Cuff is molded to the anterior (front) part of your tibia and is designed to unload your foot/ankle by transferring your body weight to the Anterior Tibia/Patellar Tendon Tuberosity. The cuff preforms like a Below Knee Amputee's Cheetah Running Leg.
The shoes I've been wearing are the Salomon X-Wind Pro. Of course I bought these shoes 6-7 years ago and shoe companies like to make new style and names to keep you guessing/buying different shoes. These Salomon have stood the test of time against and IDEO! Here's the closest one I could find.

These Salomon are a wide shoe and should be able to accommodate most ExoSym's. It may be best to go by a local specialty running store to try some on to see what size you need.

We've found that the high top version of shoes really helps keep the foot plate from twisting and popping out the back of the shoe.
