Back in September 2012 the then German champions Borussia Dortmund showcased their latest training machine - "the Footbonaut"

It looked more like it belonged in the film 'Tron' than on a German football team's training facility.

But the so-called Footbonaut was real.

The machine was constructed by Christian Guettler from Berlin-based company "CGoal".

Footbonaut is a four-sided ball feeding machine erected on a 14-metre square grid, with a synthetic grass surface, providing non-stop footballs to a receiving player.

The technology allows balls to be fed at varying heights and speeds and from four different directions.

The receiving player can be allowed one touch to control, or be asked to execute the task with just one touch and then pass, or shoot at a target within the grid which is indicated by a light flashing.

There is a total of targets 64 to play on in a 360-degree environment.
