This spring, billions of cicadas from two broods will emerge simultaneously for the first time since 1803. These broods, appearing every 13 and 17 years, won't converge again until 2245. University of Missouri Extension specialist Tamra Reall, also known as “Dr. Bug,” explains that broods are groups of cicadas sharing the same emergence years, each designated by Roman numerals. Brood XIII emerges every 17 years, and Brood XIX every 13 years. Reall, a Kansas City horticulturist and entomologist, anticipates an extraordinary event, last witnessed during Thomas Jefferson's presidency, long before Missouri's statehood.
