Harley Davidson is perhaps one of the most iconic names in motorcycle history, but it seems like History is what Harley is going to become. Now you may be looking for someone to blame but this is solely on Harley Davidson itself.

Since its founding in 1907, Harley Davidson has been an indisputable symbol of Americana. Despite a prolonged drop in sales, its logo is instantly identifiable to virtually everyone who speaks English.
This wasn't always the situation. Harley Davidson's V-twin engine was a game-changer in the motorcycle industry, and for the first two decades after the firm's founding in 1907, it propelled the company to unprecedented heights of innovation and growth. The two pistons in this engine design are linked at their bases and are slanted upwards at a 45-degree angle from one another, hence the term "V-twin." This distinctive engine layout helped Harley stand out, and it became so iconic that both Harley and Indian, the two largest American motorcycle manufacturers, employ it to this day.

When World War II broke out and the United States military need dependable and inexpensive motorcycles for use overseas, HD had the chance to develop even more. The price and accessibility of these machines sometimes referred to as "Liberators," led to their widespread adoption in the years following World War II. When that contract was finally completed, they became more well-known and were able to ramp up production. In fact, modern American military and law enforcement agencies continue to purchase motorcycles from Harley-Davidson. However, they ran into trouble when they became the first to license tools and designs to a Japanese business called Sankyo, which then used them to pioneer Japan's motorbike industry. While this was a boon to their bottom line initially, it eventually became a source of stress.

Japanese bikes emerged as a dominant force in the American market, despite stiff opposition from European manufacturers like Ducati and BMW. With the phrase "You meet the nicest people on a Honda," Honda began marketing the Cub to American consumers in 1963. Sales of new Honda motorcycles in the United States accounted for half of all motorcycle sales the following year, in 1964. Harley Davidson, in order to keep up with the competition, embraced the aggressive, biker gang image that they had previously avoided.
