Wood Finishes Direct guide to applying Fiddes Hard Wax Oil

Fiddes Hard Wax Oil can be applied directly from the tin onto a suitably prepared wooden surface with a good quality paint brush, lint free cloth or microfibre roller or floor finish applicator. Fiddes hardwax oil does not require a primer or thinning.

Apply Fiddes Hard Wax Oil in a well ventilated area at room temperature. For best results, and maximum protection we recommend 2 coats on hard woods such as oak, and 3 coats on soft woods such as pine. Always do a test area before starting any project to test product suitability and the final finish that the product produces.

If considering a 3rd coat, do a small test area first in a corner or other inconspicuous area to ascertain whether the wood is able to absorb a 3rd coat of Fiddes Hardwax Oil. Wood acts like a sponge with water, it can only absorb so much oil so its important to see if the timber is able to absorb a 3rd coat before applying it.

1st coat: Stir the hardwax oil thoroughly before and during use. Apply THINLY and work into the wood following the direction of the grain. Remove any excess hard wax oil immediately with a lint free cloth.

2nd coat: Apply a thin second coat once the first has dried. Once dry the surface can be buffed with a dry cloth to improve the shine.

Matt finish - All sheens of Fiddes Hard Wax Oil are produced as a gloss, a matting agent is then added to reduce the sheen from a gloss to a satin, more is added to reduce a satin finish down to a matt finish. The matting agent or compound settles to the bottom of the tin and forms a thick sediment on the bottom of the tin. It is vital that this product is thoroughly stirred prior to applying to timber taking extra care to ensure that the stirring stick makes contact with the bottom of the tin to scrape up the matting agent and mix it in with the rest of the ingredients in the tin. This is especially important for the matt version of Fiddes Hard Wax Oil. Failure to stir the product thoroughly may result in a higher sheen level than that desired.

Fiddes Hard Wax Oil is child and food safe and is perfect for use on a wide range of wooden surfaces including wooden floors, doors, furniture, kitchen worktops and more.
