Land Rover Discovery 3 / LR3 / LR4 Rear Propshaft Replacement - Center Bearing Failure

Should you replace the center bearing or the whole shaft? Quick answer, replace the whole shaft if its over 2 years or if inspection of the rear UV joint reveals that is has notching.

It is also much easier to replace the whole rear propshaft ond the disco 3 than to replace the center bearing. It also saves you a lot of time.

To make things clear, it is most often the rubber holding the center bearing, and in turn the rear propshaft, that is the major failing point on the Land Rover Discovery 3 rear driveline. And not the bearing it self, as you will see in the video.

This issue with the failing rubber on the center bearing also concerns the land rover models Discovery 4, LR3, LR4 and RRS.
Note: The RRS has a different propshaft than the Disco series, it's propshaft is a bit shorter. Same bolts I think.

Should you buy OE, OEM or Original Land Rover propshaft. Well from what you will see in the video OEM seem to be good enough and last you 4-6 years depending on the usage. Even with it being Britpart. But stay away from OE parts, OEM or original is the way to go. GKN, bearing seems to be what the Disco pro prefers.

Symptoms on failing rear propshaft on the land rover discovery 3 could be vibrations, humming sounds and even clunking sounds when you apply quick on and off taps on the accelerator.

The symptoms could be because of the center bearing rubber has started to tear, but the vibration and humming sounds could also be because of the notching on the rear universal joint.

Can you replace the rear propshaft on a discovery 3 your self, in your garage at home or on the driveway or even on the street? Yes, you can, with basic tools and some E-torx, inverted torx as I call them, the job is fairly straight forward. I'm not a mechanic so if I can do it you can do it.

New Propshaft - OEM lr037027-tvb500360-prop-shaft-rear-discovery-3--4
6 new bolts in the front TYP500180 Bolt
3 new special linking washers. (2 bolts fit in one) TYF500020 Locking Tab
2 new bolts in the center RYG500980 BOLT
4 new bolts in the rear. TYG500130 Bolt

Torque specs Land Rover Discovery 3 Rear Propshaft.
155Nm 110lb.ft rear
30-35Nm 22lb.ft center
73Nm 54lb.ft front
