The arrival and operation of the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad (MKT) near Addison was the most profound transformation of the decade. Although it did not cut through the town center, the railroad’s mere miles from Addison made it an important transit point for farm products, livestock, and goods from the villages of North Dallas. For a community that relied primarily on cotton, wheat, corn, and livestock, the MKT opened up opportunities for faster, cheaper transportation to major markets such as Dallas, Denison, and as far away as St. Louis. This created a constant flow of commerce and the creation of ancillary activities such as farm warehouses, small inns serving merchants, cotton buying stations, and temporary service establishments. Some farmers from more remote areas of the region also moved closer to Addison to take advantage of trade, causing a gentle and steady increase in population density.
