The art of house building in the mountains: the enduring heritage of the nomads 🏠

Early in the morning, when the dew still sits on the mountain grass, we are busy with the work that has been handed down to us from generation to generation. The strong rocks of the mountains are going to be our home. Grandfather chooses the best stones with his keen eye.

My little boy picks up small stones with gusto and says: "Mommy, can this be our blood?" His little hands are full of dirt and his eyes are shining with excitement.

Grandfather shows me how to stack stones with the skill he has gained from living in this mountain for eighty years. He says: "My daughter, every stone has its place, like life, everything is beautiful in its place."

We strengthen the stones with the mortar we made from clay and spring water. Grandfather says that this house should last for a hundred years. His calloused hands carefully place each stone.

The sound of sheep bells is heard in the distance and the scent of mountain plants is in the air. My son sometimes picks wild flowers and puts them next to the stones, saying: "This way our blood becomes more beautiful."

The walls are slowly rising. Grandfather says: "This house should face the sun to stay warm in the winter." Hikmat patiently explains everything to me.

When the sun reaches the middle of the sky, we rest a little. We eat local bread and cheese and grandfather tells about the days when he built a house with his father.

Now the walls are split in half. My son says: "Mom, can we have a window to see the mountains from there?" Grandpa smiles and says, "Sure, that's a big window."

This house is not just a shelter, it is the story of our life that is being written with every stone. A story of love, empathy, teaching and learning. Here in the heart of the mountain, we are building a house that will be full of laughter and smell of life.
