Step into the serene world of Dolphin Sands, a striking architectural retreat by Matt Williams Architects perched on the coastal dunes of Tasmania. This small yet expansive cabin, measuring thirty-six square meters, is designed as a “solid tent” that floats lightly above steep dunes, integrating seamlessly with the surrounding landscape and allowing local wildlife, including snakes, to move freely beneath.

Every element is thoughtfully placed to frame the breathtaking views of Great Oyster Bay and the Freycinet Peninsula, creating a living “viewfinder” that connects occupants intimately with nature. The interior uses a limited palette of textured materials, including OSB wood and black limestone flooring, providing thermal comfort within a tightly sealed envelope, while the minimal footprint preserves the delicate coastal terrain.

Accessing the cabin is part of the experience itself: from landing in Tasmania, driving along the coastal road, to walking the winding path that leads to this secluded hideaway. The design prioritizes sustainability, with a buried water reservoir and a foundation system that avoids concrete, minimizing environmental impact.
