During World War II, the Battle of Dunkirk took place from May 26 to June 4, 1940. It was a pivotal moment where British and Allied forces were trapped by German troops on the beaches of Dunkirk, France, following a rapid German advance through Belgium and Northern France.

As the situation became dire, a massive evacuation operation was launched, known as Operation Dynamo. A flotilla of civilian and military vessels, including boats, ferries, and fishing boats, was assembled to rescue the stranded soldiers.

Despite facing heavy air and ground attacks from the Germans, the evacuation was remarkably successful. Over 330,000 Allied troops, mostly British but including some French and Belgian forces, were safely evacuated from Dunkirk to England.

The evacuation at Dunkirk allowed the British Army to regroup and continue the fight against Nazi Germany. It became a symbol of resilience and solidarity, often referred to as the "Miracle of Dunkirk."
