Lolei Temple is located north of National Road No. 6 (Siem Reap-Phnom Penh), at kilometer marker 13, turning off 500 meters from the national road, in Lalai Village, Prasat Bakong Commune, Prasat Bakong District, Siem Reap Province. The temple is located in the center of the "Indra Ta Dak" baray, which is 3,800 meters long and 300 meters wide, near the temple of Wat Lolei.


The temple was called by various names by post-Angkor people, but its original name was Iswarlok, which was built in 893 by King Yasovarman I, son of King Indravarman I.[1] King Yasovarman I succeeded his father from 889–910 CE and built Lolei Temple in 893 to honor the souls of his parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents.

Among the ancient temples of the “Roluos Group” (Prasat Bakong District, Siem Reap Province), Prasat Lalai is an ancient structure located about one kilometer northeast of Prasat Preah Ko. This temple is a brick structure with four towers, built in the “Indratdak” baray in the late 9th century (893 CE) by King Yasovarman I (Yasovarman I) to dedicate it to his ancestors. It should also be recalled that this Indratdak baray is 3,800 meters long and 800 meters wide, built by King Indratdak I (877-889 CE)(1), the father of King Yasovarman I.


When comparing the craftsmanship of the sculptures with those of other temples, many researchers say that the artists here are truly skilled and know a specific “anatomy.” The inscriptions on the main doors of each tower are also extremely intricate.
