The H.39 was one of the most effective French tanks available during the German invasion in 1940; the simulation presents it's 37mm Armour Piercing Capped projectile impacting the upper plate of the Panzer III F.

Face hardened armour (FHA) was common on early war German tanks; this type of armour featured an extremely hard front face, with the remainder of the plate being tougher and more ductile. The intention of this was to cause projectiles to shatter or deform on impact, dissipating their energy, instead of the armour having to deform and absord the energy. The FHA has a 5mm portion of 600BHN steel, with the remainder being 350BHN. The bulk is still relatively hard, with low elongation, hence the very noticeable shear bands which form.

The Mle.1938 projectile's hardness has been approximated as 450BHN at the base, upto 600BHN at the nose and of decent quality. Based on very limited sources, the cap has been modelled as magnesium. This was done on other French projectiles of the era, and would be a reasonable assumption, given the low thickness of the cap (most steel armour piercing caps are a lot thicker, in order to absorb the initial shock of the impact). With a cap this thin, even if was steel, it wouldn't prevent shattering of the projectile. Despite the shattering, the projectile has enough energy to push a plug out of the armour.
