Middle Cerebral Artery Doppler Ultrasound Interpretation / Ultrasound in Fetal Growth Assessment

Doppler velocimetry of the Middle Cerebral Artery (MCA) is a method to assess impedance / resistance to flow in the fetal brain circulation. Fetal middle cerebral arterial (MCA) Doppler assessment is an important part of assessing Fetal cardiovascular distress, Fetal anemia, Fetal hypoxia. In the appropriate situation it is a very useful adjunct to umbilical artery Doppler assessment. It is also used in the additional work up of intra-uterine growth restriction (IUGR), twin to twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), twin anemia polycythemia sequence (TAPS)
The middle cerebral artery is examined close to its origin from the internal carotid artery. By using color Doppler flow imaging the middle cerebral artery can be seen as a major lateral branch of Circle of Willis, running anterolateral at the borderline between anterior and middle cerebral fossae. The MCA Doppler is done to assess resistance in fetal brain vasculature.
