Struggles, Smiles and Rain | Hiking the Pieterpad with My Daughter

Join me, my daughter Nina, and our dog Frodo as we hike a 2-day stretch of the Pieterpad—the most famous long-distance trail in the Netherlands.

Day 1: We covered 22 km from Holten to a cozy B&B past Hellendoorn. It rained the entire day, and to make things tougher, Nina struggled with her backpack. We tried to fix it along the way, and even though it was a hard day for her, she kept going—and eventually found her smile again. We passed through peaceful forests and gentle hills in the Sallandse Heuvelrug.

Day 2: The rain finally stopped! With 14 km to Ommen under dry skies, the mood lifted and the scenery felt even better—rolling hills, soft paths, and quiet views.

It wasn’t always easy, but sharing this journey made every step worth it. In Ommen, we hopped on three trains to get back to where we started.

A rainy start, a stronger finish—and a memory I’ll always treasure.
