Interdigital tinea pedis starts when fungus hits damp skin between the toes, often after walking barefoot in locker rooms or wearing sweaty shoes. Once the skin is broken, bacteria can add odor and pain. To prevent this:

1. Wear shower sandals in locker rooms, public pools, and hotel bathrooms.
2. Wash and dry feet well, taking a moment to towel between every toe.
3. Change socks when they’re damp and give shoes a full day to air out.
4. Pick breathable shoes, mesh or leather over plastic.
5. Don’t share towels or footwear if someone in the house has a foot infection.
6. Use an over-the-counter antifungal cream at the first sign of itching or peeling.

A few small habits go a long way toward keeping fungus (and the itch) away.
