Why did C.S. Lewis believe in Purgatory since he wasn't Catholic?

***Father Michael Ward is a member of the Faculty of Theology and Religion at the University of Oxford and Professor of Apologetics at Houston Christian University. He studied English at the University of Oxford, theology at the University of Cambridge, and he earned his PhD in Divinity at the University of St. Andrews.
***Fr. Michael Ward followed the footsteps of his dear friend, Walter Hooper (Lewis' secretary), from Anglicanism into the Catholic Church. Fr. Ward is now an ordained priest within the Anglican Ordinariate within the Catholic Church. The Anglican Ordinariate was founded by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009 for Anglicans to keep their liturgy, patrimony, and congregations intact while becoming in full communion with the Catholic Church.
***We also share a dear friend in Dr. David Baird who played a significant role in leading us both in the Catholic Church. Dr. David Baird was the President of the C.S. Lewis Society at Oxford University for a time. Fr. Michael Ward and Dr. Baird are currently writing a book together called "Popcorn with the Pope" that will be released by Word on Fire.
***He is the author and editor of multiple books, most notably the award-winning Planet Narnia: The Seven Heavens in the Imagination of C.S. Lewis, After Humanity: A Guide to C.S. Lewis’s The Abolition of Man and The Cambridge Companion to C.S. Lewis. On the fiftieth anniversary of Lewis’s death, Dr. Ward unveiled a permanent national memorial to Lewis in Poets’ Corner, Westminster Abbey, London.
