“The relevant Chinese departments conduct cybersecurity reviews of network products that affect or may affect national security in accordance with laws and regulations. It is a normal regulatory measure taken to safeguard national security. Both Chinese and foreign enterprises operating in China must abide by Chinese laws and regulations and not endanger China's national security.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Mao Ning, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“The possible export control of Japan to China will not only affect the regional and even global semiconductor industrial and supply chain, but also cause losses for Japanese companies. We hope Japan will make decisions prudently and not add factors that further complicate mutual trust and bilateral relations between the two countries. China will assess the impact of Japan's policy. If the Japanese side artificially sets restrictions on normal semiconductor industry cooperation between the two countries, seriously harming China's interests, China cannot sit idly by and will resolutely respond.”

“We sincerely hope that the Latin American and Caribbean countries concerned will clearly understand the general trend, prudently handle Taiwan-related issues, and join the big family of friendship and cooperation between China and Latin America at an early date.”

STORYLINE:
The Chinese government on Monday defended its investigation of the biggest US memory chip maker Micron Technology Inc. as a "normal regulatory measure" to maintain “national security.”

Last week, the Cyberspace Administration of China announced that it would look for national security threats in the technology and manufacturing of Micron, a key supplier to Chinese factories.

Commenting on this decision at a daily briefing on Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said the "relevant departments" probed products that “affect or may affect national security in accordance with laws and regulations.”

“Both Chinese and foreign enterprises operating in China must abide by Chinese laws and regulations and not endanger China's national security,” Mao stressed.

The probe came as the US. is stepping up efforts to cut off China’s access to technology and equipment to make advanced computer chips, including lobbying allies like Japan and the Netherlands to join the effort.

During Monday's briefing, Mao warned that Japan’s planned control on exports of chipmaking equipment would harm both the global semiconductor supply chain and the interests of Japanese companies.

Appealing to Japan to "make decisions prudently" in light of its long-term interests, Mao said China would “assess the policy and “resolutely respond” if it seriously undermined its interests.

Tokyo announced the plan to restrict chip exports on Friday without naming any specific country, but media reports suggested that the move was very likely aimed at China, which is widely considered a growing challenge to Japan’s national security and economy.

Asked about Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen’s ongoing trip to Central America made in the hope of shoring up the island’s partnerships there, Mao reiterated that the one-China principle was irreversible.
