Villa Pehuenia is located on the north bank of Lake Aluminé, close to its union with Lake Moquehue. The name of the village comes from the beautiful Araucaria, a typical tree from the area that is nowadays cultivated all over the world. Pehuén or “araucaria araucana” is it’s original name in indigenous language. This tree is considered to be sacred for the aborigines that inhabited this region (Its fruits, the “piñones” where the main ingredient of their diet. The piñones have high levels of carbon hydrates), first the Pehuenches and then the Mapuches. The Mapuche people moved into this region from Chile in the 18th century, absorbing the earlier indigenous people and dominating the region until the late 19th century.
Volcan Batea Mahuida's crater has a lagoon and contiguously are a natural lookout point where a breathtaking view of the lakes Moquehue and Alumine could be observed.
