Massive warship joins Dutch fleet at sea (ft helicopters) 🇳🇱

The Dutch Joint Support Ship, HNLMS Karel Doorman, departs Plymouth to join other NATO warships training in the English Channel. Three helicopters that transited through England joined it a few weeks earlier while it was in Ireland.

The HNLMS Karel Doorman (A833) is the largest ship in service with the Royal Netherlands Navy. As a multi-function support ship it is capable of transporting cargo for large-scale operations and supplying other warships, vehicles, and aircraft with fuel, ammunition, and supplies.

It is also capable of launching an amphibious military assault with two Landing Crafts and up to six NH-90 medium utility helicopters or two CH-47 Chinook troop carriers.

Additionally, the HNLMS Karel Doorman can act as a command centre, a hospital, a prison or evacuate large number of persons. It has been used to deliver ambulances and medical supplies to Ebola-struck countries in Africa.

The warship left His Majesty's Naval Base Devonport to join HNLMS Groningen, HNLMS De Zeven Provinciën, HNLMS Van Amstel, HNLMS Dolfijn, FGS Sachsen Anhalt, HDMS Niels Juel, HMS Duncan and RFA Tiderace operating in the Plymouth Sound and English Channel.
