In 1964 the legendary American organist Dr Virgil Fox arranged this simple song by Bach for a recording at the equally legendary organ in the Wanamaker department store in Philadelphia. As the great artist Virgil Fox was, he realized both the problems and the potentials of this instrument. The piece poses few demands regarding the technical aspects of the playing (for a professional organist). The challenge is the orchestration which requires a completely artistic talent and skill. Virgil Fox had that talent and skill and the result is a stunningly moving experience for the listener.
I’m not trying to reproduce or imitate the original - rather to bring an homage to the ”co-composer” of Bach: Virgil Fox and his uniqueness as an organist and artist.
