Harrison Covington describes attacking Japanese ground targets from his P-47 fighter plane in the Philippines and Japan. He recalls his belief that he was attacking targets in Japan in preparation for the planned invasion.

Harrison discusses being hit by anti-aircraft fire while on a bombing mission over Japan. With a cockpit filling with smoke and on his own, Harrison flew toward the ocean in order to avoid bailing out over mainland Japan. He contemplated ditching at sea but decided to head towards Okinawa since his damaged P-47 kept flying.

Harrison was able to make it to an airfield but was unable to properly land. After some maneuvering, he crash landed in front of a P-38 Lightning fighter plane and just got out of the way before being hit by it.

After this incident, Harrison was sent to a course to prepare for the planned invasion of Japan. The war would end, and he was transferred to an outfit flying P-51 Mustangs during the Occupation period.

About the Veteran: Lt. Col. Harrison Covington was a fighter pilot with the US Army Air Force in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He flew the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft while stationed with the 311th Fighter Squadron in New Guinea, the Philippines, and Okinawa.
