Описание к видео Uru | History and Making of the World’s Largest Handmade Ship | afterImages | Documentary

Sathyan is a master Uru craftsman from Beypore, Kerala. As the chief craftsman, he leads a team of skilled hands in building one of the world’s largest handmade ships — an Uru , using knowledge passed down through generations.

An Uru is not built from drawings or blueprints. Its form lives in memory, experience, and the accumulated judgement of craftsmen who have spent years working with wood, scale, and water.

In this film, Sathyan talks about the process behind building an Uru — from selecting timber to shaping the hull, and the discipline, coordination, and patience required to construct something of such scale entirely by hand. He traces the history of the Uru, a ship that once connected Beypore to ports across the Indian Ocean, and reflects on how this centuries-old craft has adapted to changing times.

He also speaks about the present state of the art, the challenges of sustaining the craft and the shrinking number of skilled workers.
