Seafarers representing 27 Pacific Island nations, including the U.S. territory of Guam, sailed into the Hagatna Boat Basin at dawn to kick off this years FestPac event.

The 12th Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture officially began on May 22, 2016 with a special canoe welcome ceremony during the early morning hours in the boat basin of Guam’s capital city of Hagåtña. Seafarers representing various countries, including the U.S. territory of Guam, sailed into the Hagatna Boat Basin in 15 different canoes.

The voyagers were greeted by delegates, visitors and the local community who traveled near and far for this world-class event.

An official opening ceremony was held later Sunday afternoon at the Paseo Stadium grounds in Hagåtña where 25 island nations performed in front of a packed house during the parade of countries. Governor Eddie Baza Calvo also declared the official opening of the festival grounds and a fiery performance from the Guam delegation capped off the night with a finale filled with music, dance and fireworks.

Also known as the “Olympics of Pacific Arts,” FestPac is a traveling festival that is hosted every four years by a different country in the Pacific and features delegations from 27 participating island nations. FestPac was conceived by the Pacific Community (SPC) to stop the erosion of traditional practices by sharing and exchanging culture. About 3,000 delegates are participating in this festival from May 22 through June 4.
