Having a dog that jumps up in yours or your visitor's personal space doesn't always seem like a big issue if it is a small dog. But if it is a big dog it is more of an issue as it can be uncomfortable or even be painful. Yet allowing the behaviour to happen will send the message 'I have the right to jump on you an invade your space'. We may translate the behaviour as 'he is just saying hello' or 'he is excited to see me' yet whilst this could be the reason there is often much more going on.
The dog could think:
That they tell you what to do
That you are their subordinate
Or they could be relieved to see that you are back home and was worried of your absence.

There is more chance the dog is controlling the situation than you may think, so it is best to not allow them in yours or your visitor's personal space unless they are invited. This way you will communicate authority which in turn will make the dog feel safe.

In this video you will see that being jumped on can be addressed via the 3-strike rule by
1. Pushing him off when he jumps on your (1st strike)
2. If he does it again move him further away (2nd strike)
3. If he continues put him in another room for timeout to think about what he is doing for 5 seconds (3rd strike)

Then repeat, repeat, repeat gradually extending the time by 5 seconds with each timeout until he gives up.

When administering the 3-strike rule (push, move, isolate) with him for jumping up, be sure that the lessons are quick and clear. If there is too much chasing going on or if he is getting the better of you then we have to manage the environment better, so he associates the action with an immediate consequence. If the consequences are not working, make the consequence progressively more inconvenient e.g., longer timeouts and/or pick him up firmly. Someone has to give up, don’t let it be you.
