Psychological Concepts for Developing a Strong Personality and Leadership – As per Dr. Arun K Shukla
Chief Mentor, Psychologist & Faculty Captain – La Militaire Academy
The Word Association Test (WAT) is one of the most crucial components of the psychological assessment in the Services Selection Board (SSB). Its purpose is not to check grammar, vocabulary, or academic knowledge, but to reveal the subconscious thought patterns, emotional tendencies, and personality structure of a candidate. In psychology, words serve as triggers that evoke immediate responses, and the nature of these responses helps assessors understand how a candidate thinks, feels, and reacts under time pressure.
At SSB, candidates are shown a series of words for a few seconds and asked to frame sentences instantly. The very lack of time ensures spontaneity, eliminating the possibility of rehearsed or artificial responses. This reflects the candidate’s natural mindset, values, and approach towards life. A positive, meaningful, and constructive sentence indicates optimism, clarity, and resilience—qualities essential in military leadership. On the other hand, excessively negative or defensive responses may reflect stress, fear, or lack of emotional balance.
From a psychological standpoint, WAT is a projective test, similar in principle to the Rorschach Inkblot Test, where responses reveal the individual’s inner personality. For the armed forces, it helps identify whether a candidate possesses Officer-Like Qualities (OLQs) such as initiative, courage, responsibility, teamwork, and decision-making ability.
The purpose of WAT goes beyond surface-level judgment; it helps assessors verify consistency between the candidate’s projected personality in interviews, group tasks, and other psychological tests. When responses remain natural, balanced, and aligned with OLQs, it reflects authenticity and suitability for an officer’s role.
In essence, the WAT is a psychological mirror—its true purpose lies in uncovering the hidden layers of personality and determining if the candidate can think positively, act responsibly, and remain resilient under uncertainty and pressure.
