If you enjoy working with burls and beautiful grains that may be soft or prone to movement, stabilizing might be for you. This talk will cover the what & why of stabilized wood, methods of stabilization, woodworking applications, species recommendations, and safety. Chris will take away the mystery of how this process works, give you the basics, and let you decide where stabilized wood can fit into your next work. Example applications can include utensil handles, turning blanks, inlays, and decorative accents.

About Chris: Chris has been woodworking since his early teen years in his grandfather’s workshop. A career in teaching shop class brought him to the Twin Cities in 2011, and provided room to grow in the passion of learning, teaching, and woodworking. A number of years later saw woodworking involvement around the area with the MN Woodturners, local craft & art fairs, teaching community ed classes, and building guitars. Through the whole journey burls, offcuts, and small pieces of beautiful grain were saved knowing they could be used one day for something interesting. From woodturning to building guitars, many new ideas have been inspired the consistency and resilient nature that stabilized wood provides.
