Good practice to incorporate in parts of routine flights to increase comfort level when faced with an actual light failures occurrence while establishing an approach to land at night.

Determining when to flare becomes more of problem when presented with a light failure. So naturally, first thing is to make sure you are conducting a stabilized approach with an appropriate glide slope. Second, the flare as stated in Aircraft Operating Handbooks should be initiated when the runway lights at the far end of the runway first appear to be rising higher than the nose of the airplane. Third, you want to slightly pitch the aircraft in a nose up attitude and feel the runway using power and pitch changes to allow for smooth touchdown.(easier said than done ;))
So to sum up, when faced with light failure landing at night, the secret is to fly a stable approach, gentle flare, smooth coordination between pitch and power and more importantly more practice on routine flights!!
