This is a long video of koi spawning, this unedited video gives you some idea of the time scale and hours involved when koi spawn! Koi Spawning is a long Drawn out affair the fertilisation only takes secounds once the female releases her eggs with a shimmy and the males shimmy to fertilise the eggs. But then it takes her 15 to 20 minutes before she is ready to spawn again. As a female can carry 100, 000 eggs per kilo it takes a very long time to shed all these eggs. The big yellow koi that looks like a male koi is the female! It is Akame, which is a Red Eyed Karashigoi so looks can be decieving. The koi had already started spawning in the main pond when I got up in my Pjs at 4.30am in the morning!!! No Sound as my wife is not addicted to koi breeding and would not appperaciate being woken up with the good news!!! No spawning in the spawning pool so what do I know! So I decided to put them back into the main pond at 5.00am. All went well until the last but one koi, a male shiro who objected strongly and managed to throughly soak me despite being in the koi sock at the time!!! Back upstairs for dry set of Pjs Oh the joys of koi breeding! Soaking wet Pjs are not very comfortable whatever time of day! Later on in the video you can see a Shiro Utsuri female had started spawning as well, Now this female shiro has spawned at least three times previously and every time there seems to be a lot of infertile eggs? I know it is not the males as other females with the same males produce good results? The koi have calmed down now at 12 noon after an hour of cold rain which has cooled there ardor! So approx 8 hours of spawning in the pond. Interestingly not all the females spawned so I will leave some brushes in to catch any more tonight?
