On September 5, 2006, KVOA TV NEWS reported on a collaborative effort led by Dr. John D. Arnold, CEO of PPEP, Inc., involving PPEP TEC students, WorldCare, and LULAC volunteers. These groups successfully collected and distributed essential items, including clothing, medical supplies, baby formula, and other necessities, to farmworkers and families in Hatch, New Mexico and affected areas.
The need for assistance arose after heavy rainfall caused an arroyo north of Hatch to overflow, resulting in significant flooding with water reaching waist-deep levels. As a result, residents were forced to evacuate their homes. Of the estimated 1,600 residents in Hatch at the time, 500 were either temporarily or permanently displaced, and more than 400 homes and businesses sustained varying degrees of damage.
PPEP, Inc. was founded in 1967 by Dr. John David Arnold aboard a 1957 Chevy bus named “La Tortuga (tortoise)” with a $19,000 grant from the Tucson Committee for Economic Opportunity, with the vision and conviction to “Improve the quality of rural life.” Five decades later PPEP remains dedicated to carrying out the dreams of its first Bracero migrant farm workers for a better way of life, while also investing in many other programs that help lift struggling communities and individuals out of poverty. PPEP has been able to flourish and grow into a robust, multi-service organization, with local, regional and international reach.
Today PPEP’s professional and dedicated staff provides programs and services related to employment and training, human services, alternative charter high schools, affordable housing, micro-business lending, services to the development disabled, and international programs. You will learn more about the amazing work PPEP undertakes for our communities, and about the key milestones and achievements it has attained over the last 58 years, we invite you to continue the journey alongside us as La Tortuga continues rolling into the future and see how this is being accomplished.
