TIPS: Lots of water on this hike, plan on getting wet and muddy. I was glad to have some waterproof boots. I've only hiked this trail once so far and it was in late November. I think this might have actually been a good time to go -- the crowds weren't bad and the snow made the cliffs above the lake look amazing! We saw a waterfall around 0.6 miles but I'm not sure what it was named. Looking at maps there are two waterfalls farther on: Hundred Step Falls and Apron Falls. These we didn't see. Maybe they're smaller in November or maybe you need to hike a bit off trail to see them. Next time I plan to see these!

Apparently this is a very popular hike and I can see why. It's really great. It's not very difficult, not too long, and it's interesting all the way to the top. You hike alongside the Lake 22 Creek and are always close to water. There's a bridge and an impressive waterfall and enough change in scenery to keep it interesting all the way to the top. I was impressed by the amount of trail work evident on this hike. You can tell the Washington Trails Association and volunteers have put in a LOT of work to maintain this trail. The lake itself is tucked into a dramatic glacial cirque with towering cliffs on the far side. It's really impressive when you first arrive. I hiked it late November and the snow contrasting with the green of the pine trees and dark rocky cliffs was quite stunning. I was also very impressed by the bridge and boardwalks and trail that let you actually walk all the way around the lake! It was really neat to be able to see the lake from all sides and to hike right up underneath the huge cliffs on the far side of the lake. I think this one is in my Washington top-10!
