This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the all-new 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Versus the all-new 2024 Lexus TX 3-row, large SUV.
The TX and the Grand Highlander are based on the same platform and offer great space in the 3-row SUV category. The burning question is, is the TX worth the premium over the Grand Highlander? Let’s get into it….
The TX and Grand Highlander offer three powertrain options. Both share the same gas and Hybrid Max powertrain but one is tuned for premium fuel and the other for regular fuel.
The gas models have a 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The TX has 275 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, that’s an extra 10 horsepower and 7 lb-ft of torque more than the Grand Highlander.
The TX 500h and the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max have a 2.4L turbocharged hybrid powertrain with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The TX has 366 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, Thant’s an extra 4 horsepower and 6 lb-ft of torque more than the Grand Highlander.
Where they differ is in the next powertrain. The Grand Highlander has another hybrid available with less power but excellent fuel economy. A 2.5L 4-cylinder hybrid matched to an ECVT, a combined 243 horsepower.
The TX gets a PHEV, it’s a 3.5L V6 plug-in hybrid powertrain, it’s matched to a CVT and has a combined 404 horsepower. It has an EV range of 53 km/33 miles.
We feel the best comparison is between the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max and the TX 350 or the TX F Sport 500h. We’ll be breaking down those models in our comparison.
The Grand Highlander Hybrid Max interior competes well with the TX. The Grand Highlander gas and 2.5L Hybrid models offer more of a Toyota grade interior and the price reflects that.
There are some interior differences between the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max and the TX. First off, the Grand Highlander is a 7-8 passenger vehicle, the TX 6-7 passengers. The TX Hybrid Max F Sport models only allow for 6-passengers, the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max 7 because the third row in the Grand Highlander has three seats, the TX only two.
The screen sizes are different as well, the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max has dual 12.3” screens and the TX has a 14” touchscreen, a standard 7” driver display, available 12.3”.
Both have wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto as standard features and they come with many of the same available features. There are some exceptions where the TX has more like the Lexus has a power folding third row, the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max is manual. The Toyota Hybrid Max has an 11-speaker JBL Sound system, the TX an available 21-speaker Mark Levinson system, a standard 12-speaker audio system. Both
The TX and Grand Highlander Hybrid Max have a 10-way power driver’s seat, the TX gets a 10-way power passenger seat, the Grand Highlander 8-way. The TX also has 4-way driver seat lumbar support. Advanced Park is also a feature the TX gets, the Hybrid Max Grand Highlander does not.
