KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI – A Grand Rapids man was sentenced to prison after he was convicted of murder.

Michael Thigpen, 34, was sentenced to life in prison Feb. 7 after he was convicted by a jury Jan. 7 of the premediated first-degree murder of Roosevelt Thompson, 54, on Nov. 20, 2019.

Thigpen was convicted of felon in possession of a firearm and sentenced to six to 20 years in prison. He was also convicted of two counts of felony firearms and sentenced to time served.

Thigpen fatally shot Thompson around 1:30 a.m. on the date in November 2019, on Mabel Street near Cobb Avenue in Kalamazoo.

Around 10:30 p.m. on the day before the shooting, about three hours before Thompson was shot, Thigpen was on the phone with his girlfriend, Dianna Moore. He told her, “He would shoot the next person he saw,” Moore testified.

Moore testified that she then heard three or four gunshots. When she saw the news articles after, she said, she thought that it was the shooting she heard. Police found evidence of shots being fired at another location, but it was not the same location as the homicide.
