A Twisted Wedge worked best to split Live Oak heartwood. The Density of these pieces is 80 Lbs per cubic foot, ie more than water. Bone Dry it is 54 and when wet about 90. Water is 62.4 My 2nd choice to split Large pieces was a regular Wedge. The Diamond Shaped spitting wedge was totally useless on Live Oak when the pieces were more than 6" in diameter, the wedge just pops out. Live Oak pieces above 6" will not split with my 5 ton log spitter. The 8 Lb spitting maul was tried also as was useless on larger diameter Live Pieces. Live Oak is so tough that on an 18" diameter piece I drove 5 twisted wedges in flush and below the top of the log and the log still held. Thus I drive the giant wooden wedge in to split the giant pieces with the 3 to 5 wedges still in place.
