Launch of the Black Soldier Fly Production Facility in Trinidad and Tobago

Описание к видео Launch of the Black Soldier Fly Production Facility in Trinidad and Tobago

The region's first Black Soldier Fly Production Facility was successfully launched at the University Field Station, University of the West Indies on 25-26 November 2024. This pilot project, a collaboration among the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries, and the University of the West Indies, was formally opened by Dr Michelle Mellowes, CTO (Ag), Prof. Mark Wuddivira, Dean of the Faculty of Food and Agriculture (UWI), and Mrs. Tania de Getrouwe-Hoost, Livestock Development Officer (FAO). This initiative represents an exciting exploration and development of the local production and use of insects as animal feed. Black Soldier Flies are one of nature’s powerful recyclers with tremendous capacity to upcycle organic waste into high-value products such as protein-rich feed, nutrient-packed frass (organic fertilizer), and renewable oils. The technology is being developed for use by small farmers, communities, and home use and is focused on developing natural solutions for animal feed, crop nutrition and protection, and waste management while addressing the pressing global challenge of creating sustainable agricultural systems.
