Religion and mythology in India are closely intertwined and cannot be separated. Furthermore, both are so vast and confusing that any generalization is likely to be oversimplified. Vedas are the earliest Indian texts and are a series of hymns sung in honor of the Aryan gods, who personified natural forces such as the sun, storm, fire, and soma, among others. By means of ritual and sacrifice, the Vedic religion sought to obtain power, prosperity, health, and other blessings.

During the time of Buddha, around 500 B.C., the old Vedic religion had been transformed by Brahmin priests into a fantastical hodgepodge, with the priests claiming godlike powers for themselves. Buddha addressed the problem of human suffering and discovered a means of eliminating it through disciplined living and giving up one's desires. As a result, the Brahmins were forced to incorporate his ideas into their teachings. This resulted in Hinduism, a polytheistic religion with three major gods: Brahma, Vishnu, and Siva.

Let us examine the principal Vedic and Hindu gods and relate two myths about them.

Main Vedic Gods
The main god of the Vedas is Indra, who rides his solar chariot across the sky and wields the thunderbolt. In his role as a storm god, he brings rain to India's parched soil.

The cosmic order is maintained by Mitra and Varuna. Varuna, the moon, supervises oaths while Mitra, the sun, oversees contracts and friendships. These gods represent the values of the warrior caste, just like Indra.

The priest's god of fire is Agni. He presides over the altar and hearth, exists in the form of lightning, and blazes at the center of the sun.

Brihaspati is the god of incantation and ritual, the embodiment of priestly magic.

Besides being a narcotic plant, Soma is a god who gives inspiration, frees men, and represents the principle of life.

The deity Savitar, with golden eyes, hands, and tongues, is the god of motion and all that moves or acts depends on him.

All living creatures are delighted by Ushas, the beautiful, charming goddess of the dawn.

Throughout Puchan, all things are connected - marriages are blessed, food is provided, travelers are guided, and the dead are ushered.

Shiva is the terrifying god of destruction, a powerful deity who must be bribed in order to prevent catastrophe.

Kali is Siva's wife, a bloodthirsty fertility goddess decorated with death symbols.

Those who procreate are protected by Prajapati, the master of created beings, the father of gods and demons.

In ancient India, there were two types of gods: Devas and Asuras, who battled with magical power.

Rakshas are evil semi-divine creatures who practice black magic and afflict men with misfortune.

Hindu Gods and Concepts

Brahma refers to the spiritual reality that underlies all phenomena, and is sometimes personified as a god. As a result of the waters of chaos, Brahma emerged from the golden egg and created every universe.

Maya is the veil of illusion, the sensuous appearances that lead human beings into materialism.

Transmigration of Souls refers to the propensity of souls to take on various material forms, from the mineral to the superhuman. Souls have innumerable lives since their matter is indestructible.

Karma refers to the sin debt incurred in the past and in this lifetime, a debt that must be repaid before the soul can become perfect.

Hindu god Vishnu is the supreme deity. The divine being rests on cosmic waters between creations, or universes; and in each creation, he takes on some avatar or material form such as a fish, a wild boar, a turtle, a lion, a dwarf, a man. His worship is characterized by affectionate piety and devotion.

Hindu deity Shiva is the god of creation and destruction, the dancing deity. In addition to having four arms, he has a third eye on his forehead, which he uses to destroy things. Asceticism is a hallmark of his worship.
