Breast cancer strikes more than 225,000 women each year with a death toll in excess of 40,000.  For the majority of women whose tumor contains estrogen receptors, an inexpensive generic drug, tamoxifen, may reduce the risk of recurrence by nearly half. Additionally for women at high risk of cancer but who have not yet developed it, tamoxifen dramatically reduces the likelihood of its eventual appearance.
