A tragic incident at Uttam Nagar East Metro Station in West Delhi on Friday morning has raised serious concerns about metro safety arrangements in the national capital. Around 11:07 AM, a 17-year-old boy allegedly jumped onto the tracks in front of a moving metro train from Platform No. 1. The train, which was heading towards Dwarka, ran over him, leading to his death on the spot. The incident created panic at the station and briefly affected metro services.

According to officials, the Station Controller immediately informed authorities after the incident. Metro staff and security personnel rushed to the tracks and removed the boy. Police were informed, and senior officials from the Metro Unit also reached the spot. The deceased was identified as Ashwini Dagar (17), son of Devender, a resident of Najafgarh, Delhi. He had recently passed Class 12 and was preparing for competitive examinations at a coaching centre in Uttam Nagar. Preliminary investigation suggests he was reportedly disturbed due to personal reasons. His father works as a contractual driver with the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). Ashwini was the only child of his parents.

The body has been sent to Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital for post-mortem examination. Proceedings under Section 194 of the BNSS have been initiated, and police are investigating the matter from all angles.

After the incident, a crowd gathered at the station. As soon as the train stopped, some passengers panicked and moved away hurriedly, while others began recording videos and taking photographs on their mobile phones. Such crowd behavior during sensitive situations often hampers rescue and emergency response efforts.

The incident once again highlights concerns over safety arrangements in the Delhi Metro system. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which serves nearly 5 to 6 million passengers daily, faces growing scrutiny regarding platform-level safety measures. Most stations do not have platform screen doors, making access to tracks relatively easier. During peak hours, platforms remain heavily crowded, yet the number of deployed security personnel often appears limited.

Experts believe that installing platform screen doors at busy stations, strengthening CCTV surveillance, and increasing the presence of security staff are necessary steps. Additionally, trained personnel should be assigned to monitor and identify suspicious or distressed behavior among passengers. The metro administration should also conduct awareness campaigns encouraging commuters to immediately alert station staff in case they notice anything unusual.

Delhi Metro is considered the lifeline of the capital, carrying millions of passengers every day. Ensuring commuter safety must remain the top priority. The incident at Uttam Nagar East Station is not only an irreparable loss for a family but also a reminder that safety mechanisms at crowded public transport hubs require constant review and strengthening.
