At the height of World War II, Detroit was thrown into total turmoil for three days. This was one of the nation’s worst civil disturbances, with 34 killed and over $2 million in property damage. The riot threatened war production, but more importantly, it revealed a level of racial discord that would continue to plague the city for generations.

Karen A.J. Miller is an associate professor at Oakland University. Her research focuses on questions of American public policy in the 20th Century. She is currently writing a book on Detroit during World War II.
