When Garond and his forces arrived in the Valley, he captured the convicts that were still around and started putting the mines back in operation by sending mining squads there made up of diggers and the soldiers that guarded them. The paladins Fajeth, Marcos and Silvestro were appointed as leaders over the mining squads. A recon group of paladins was also dispatched to watch the coast.

However, not long after the Myrtanians' position was established, the Orcs commanded by Hosh-Pak crossed the mountains to the south and disembarked on the Valley's coast. The recon group was ambushed during the night and the knight Tandor was the only one who survived the attack & managed to escape to the castle before the orcs laid siege to it. The mining squads were cut off from the castle's garrison as a result of the siege. The orcs also took control of the pass to the valley, killing Orik's brother in the process.
