A. What is Architecture?
The internal logic design of the microprocessor called Architecture. It determines how and when various operations are performed by the microprocessor. Before going further, I want to tell you that Microprocessor reads binary data (instruction as well user data) from memory in sequential manner.
B. Functional Blocks of 8085
The complete architecture of 8085 can be divided into 6 parts:
1. Arithmetic & Logic Unit
2. Register Unit
3. Timing & Control Unit
4. Interrupt Control
5. Serial I/O Control
6. Bus Segment
1. Arithmetic Logic Unit: The ALU of 8085 consists of execution unit, accumulator, flag register, & a temporary register. Accumulator is used to store 8-bit data and to perform arithmetic and logical operation. After completing an execution, the ALU stores the result of operation in Accumulator. Flag Register, which is also an 8-bit register, is used to store the status of Flags. Flags are used to specify the status of data (positive, negative, zero, non-zero, odd, even etc.) stored in the accumulator. Temporary register is used to hold data internally during execution and it cannot be accessed by user using program/instructions.
2. Register Unit: The register unit consists of various registers used by microprocessor to store data. In 8085 there are 6 general purpose registers, to store 8-bit data. These are identified as B, C, D, E, H and L. They can be combined as register pair- BC, DE, and HL – to perform some 16-bit operations. The programmer can use these registers to store/ copy data into the registers by using data copy instructions. There are two 16-bit registers used to hold memory address. These are Program Counter (PC) & stack pointer (SP). The size of these registers is 16 bit because the memory addresses are 16 bits. The function of program counter is to point to memory address from which the next byte (instruction/data) is to be fetched. The stack pointer is used to point a memory location in R/W memory.
In addition to above, 2 additional temporary registers, W and Z, are included in the register array. These registers are used to hold 8-bit data during the execution of some instructions. However, because they are used internally, they are not available to programmer.
