Jackie Chan balancing tea cups in horse stance is a famous, often replicated scene. But how can we get that good at Ma Bu? Follow this guide and you'll be doing it in no time.

Horse stance is a fundamental position in many martial arts and forms part of most kung fu basics training. Done properly, training Ma Bu can offer huge benefits to leg strength, hip mobility and reduce knee pain.

This video shows how to perform this stance properly within Shaolin Kung Fu and gives some tips on training it to get the position perfect. Whilst there is no one right way to do Ma Bu, there are certainly some common mistakes which you want to avoid. Following this guide will help you avoid them.

You will learn the proper foot position, knee position, how low you should go, whether you should be tilting your hips and how upright your body should be.

This position is also known as Ma Bu or Mabu in Mandarin, Kiba-dachi in Japanese and Juchum Seogi or Aannun Seogi in Korean.

I’ve presented the proper form for Shaolin Kung Fu, other styles of Kung Fu, Karate, Tai Chi, Taekwondo and Yoga may all have slightly different interpretations, however the basic principle of maintaining a position which does not compromise your joints, offers stability and mobility, and which utilises the different muscles of your body appropriately should be your target, whatever your practice.

Remember you want to be able to move with this stance, it is a practical technique not just a training tool. Also, don't forget to hold it whilst cleaning your teeth! Then hold it some more.
