On the third Saturday of each August the Woodward Dream Cruise pays homage to the golden era of not only cruising in hot rods and sports cars, but cruising along Detroit's famed Woodward Avenue. The cruise draws 1 million people who arrive to take in the sights and sounds of 30,000 classic vehicles that clog all eight lanes of Woodward from 8 Mile Rd to north to Downtown Pontiac (around the 22 Mile Rd line).

Woodward (Michigan route M-1) is the backbone of the Detroit region for over 200-years. Long before Detroit's grid was overlayed with a massive freeway system. It runs 25 miles from Downtown Detroit northwest to Downtown Pontiac. Woodward is within the city of Detroit from the riverfront out to 8 Mile Rd. Crossing over 8 Mile Rd going north carries you into the northern suburbs in affluent Oakland County. Along it's length is an uninterrupted series of 11 cities (Detroit, Highland Park, Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, Huntington Woods, Royal Oak, Berkley, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, then Pontiac).

The world's first mile of concrete paved roadway was along Woodward Avenue between 6 Mile Rd and 7 Mile Rd. It is credited as the birthplace of the modern automobile industry. In the first half of the 20th Century over 100 motor vehicle firms were established along its length. While endless consolidation and globalization have dominated the 21st Century the Detroit region remains the largest hub of auto industry headquarters, talent, assets and production on the planet. The Dream Cruise celebrates this heritage.
